The World's Most Recognised Second-Chance Qualification

What is the GED®?

The General Educational Development (GED®) test is an internationally recognised qualification that proves you have the knowledge and skills equivalent to a high school graduate — in South Africa, that means Grade 12 / Matric level.

Created in 1942 to help World War II veterans re-enter civilian life, the GED® has since been taken by over 40 million people worldwide and is accepted by virtually every employer, college, and university in the United States — and increasingly across the globe.

In South Africa, the GED® is evaluated by SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) and recognised at NQF Level 4 — making it a powerful alternative to Matric for those who did not complete traditional schooling.

It covers four subjects: Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts (English), Science, and Social Studies. You write each exam separately, at your own pace, at an authorised testing centre.

A Brief History of the GED®

1942
Born from necessity. Created by the American Council on Education (ACE) to give WWII veterans a pathway back into civilian employment and education.

1950s

Civilian adoption. Expanded beyond veterans — millions of Americans who left school early gain a recognised qualification, transforming adult education.

1980s

International reach. GED® testing centres open globally, including Canada, Caribbean and military bases worldwide. The qualification goes truly international.

2002

SAQA recognition. South Africa formally recognises the GED® via SAQA evaluation at NQF Level 4 — opening doors for SA learners who left school before Matric.

2014

Digital transformation. GED® moves fully computer-based, with adaptive testing and online study tools — making it more accessible than ever across Africa.

Today

40 million earners & counting. The GED® is the world’s leading adult education credential, with testing centres across Africa and growing recognition continent-wide.
